melonseed skiff plans
The boat is a 16' version of the melonseed skiff, originally designed for duck hunting in the 1880's. the melonseed was first documented by historian and boat builder howard chapelle in the 1930's. chapelle plans can be purchased from the smithsonian for $15.. The 16' plans call for a 90 ft2 stayed gaff rig. i'd much rather use a simple sprit rig, and the 13' plans use a 72 ft2 sprit rig. so i'm considering scaling it up to near 90 ft2 on roughly the same footprint as the 16' gaff rig. this allows me to accomplish several objectives: (1) use a simple unstayed sprit rig instead of a more complicated. Light melonseed plans - printed plans: $90.00 "a very seaworthy gunning skiff once popular in new jersey" - that's how howard chapelle describes the classic melonseed. their waterfowl hunting days are over, but melonseeds have seen a resurgence since then, as sailing dinghies with impeccable manners. they are fast, fun, easy to sail and.
